Rationale
At Old Town Infant School, we value music because we understand that it is a universal and powerful form of communication that can influence the way we feel, think and act.
Our intent is that a high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence and sense of achievement. We want children to understand the emotion that music can stir up inside you and the immense pleasure you can get from being part of something that is so much bigger than you.
Music has a power unlike anything else to bring people together and is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
Old Town prides itself on our relationship with Soundstorm. SoundStorm is the award winning Music Education Development Agency for the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole conurbation, in South West England. Their mission is transform lives through music. They aim to give every young person who wants it the opportunity to participate in exciting musical activities, whilst also reaching out to the wider community. Over 250,000 participants and 500,000 audience members have been involved in their work since they started in 2002. The Soundstorm team worked closely alongside our Music Subject Leader in developing a progressive and exciting Music Curriculum for our children.
